Google’s XML Sitemaps
Posted on June 24, 2005
I’ve been getting quite a few emails from subscribers lately asking about Google’s new sitemap technology.
People are asking me because I’m an RSS fanatic and most RSS is written in XML, as are Google’s sitemaps.
To be honest with you here (and I’m soliciting responses from anyone who is in the know) I haven’t experimented at all with Google’s sitemaps. Why? Because I’ve heard a few stories from others who have had their servers crash from setting this up two weeks ago.
Hopefully the issues have now all been addressed and resolved.
The main point of this post is about a new program that hit the scene this week. Another one of Armand Morin’s golden products selling for $97, but slated to rise to $197 shortly. In case everyone’s forgot the last product that Armand promoted helped a few online marketers to get their blogging accounts suspended…
The program helps people who are non-technical set up the new Google sitemaps without much fussing around with code. I’m not providing a link (not even an affiliate link), if you want the program I leave it to you. I don’t want the responsibility of having something I pointed you to, causing you undue grief and parting with your money…
Because…
There are a number of free tools that help you with a Google sitemap:

If the only reason you’re incorporating google sitemaps into your marketing mix is to get listed in google, save your money and your time. Get one link into your site from a reputable and related source, keep adding content to your site, and wait 10 days. Ta Da! You’re in google. Keep getting more links in, keep adding content and google will keep coming.
It’s that easy.
I just watched hundreds of people do this in the last month and did it myself with 4 new sites in June.

This Just In….
Today I decided to generate a google sitemap for my wordpress blog - this blog first. I decided to start testing with Arne Brachhold’s WordPress plugin - 5 minutes later (if that) I had a new XML sitemap for google for my WordPress blog.
Knowing what I have learned in the past 18 months about RSS, XML and search engine optimization I can say with near certainty that 5 minutes invested now will make a considerable difference to my rank, positioning and traffic - on all my WordPress blogs. Arne makes it very simple and offers the plug-in as donation ware. The next time I’ve got a glut of PayPal funds I’ll be donating!

Thanks. You just saved me $97!
You are simply awesome. Despite you being a rural-based chicken/horse farmer, there is never a dull moment with you!
If there’s one thing I can count on from you, it’s getting the real deal spoken straight and true, and I value that tremendously.
One of the problems we’re facing is that the “guru” marketers don’t seem to offer too many residual income opportunities so they end up having to invent new products or services constantly. As such, they twist things to seem more important than they are, and that’s what I can’t stand.
Thanks for highlighting this latest round of “twisting” and hopefullly saving people a lot of money and trouble. I found this post worthy enough to share with the HowToCorp Forum which should get it a tremendous amount of press.
Keep up the great work. Thank you!
Sam

Google and RSS
RSS Blending With Google Technology
Google is slowly, slowly, entering the RSS domain with their new XML powered Sitemaps program.
Now some people have had trouble setting this up, but it’s still in BETA so give it a week or two to get the bug…
How refreshing… UFO sighted on my internet screen… wait a minute… put down your six shooters… its only the truth!
Don’t know where you came from, but please stay.
Save all your money! If you use Dreamweaver MX you can get an extension for it that builds an XML sitemap for your page in liek two seconds and then you just upload to your server. A freind was about to buy a product when I found this and we both installed it and it was soooooo easy. Forget the other solutions. Of course if you don’t use DW MX then it is a mute point…

Since first writing this post I’ve tested a few of these programs and submitted one of my niche site’s new XML sitemap to Google.
I can’t say with 100% certainty but within 8 hours of submitting my sitemap, 10 new pages were visited and indexed by google. Perhaps a fluke in timing, but the XML sitemap may have been the catalyst.
Either way it took 15 minutes to set up and I got to tell google which pages to ignore and which pages to give higher relevance to.

You’ve probably come across info about Google’s sitemap function - it’s a way of telling Google all the pages in your site and how important they are, and letting Google check that list for updates. It’s a free service by Googl…
I know, or think I understand that XML is used for RSS. Now with the XML sitemap,
is this something you do with a regular
html website as well. You have an xml sitemap hooked into an html website?
Not sure the google sitemap is the way to go, so i will try the links and the updated content. Yet again thanks for this free invaluable information, i enjoy reading all the responses and its really helping with my site! thanks again sally
