I Can’t Afford to Let You Fail at Your Online Business
“The uproar and popularity contests started with Amazon and eBay, then slowly moved into what we now call Web 2.0.” – Laura Childs
It’s very important that you quickly gather and understand as much information as is available, as soon as you can because the shape of what’s already transpired – and coming still – will be the new definition of online success for the small business or solo entrepreneur.
And I fear that many will fail – returning back to their 9-5 jobs with little to show but skepticism about making money online and a load of debt from buying products that employ techniques that no longer work in this new Web 2.0 world.
This isn’t a fear tactic in play. This isn’t even a product pitch. Actually I’ve got nothing to sell, unless it’s to sell you on this idea. And I must do my job and get you hooked on the concept because your success is at stake here.
Let me explain…
Two celebrations happen in our home this week. My daughter turns 13 and I celebrate my 10th anniversary of working online from home. In those 10 years I’ve been sucked in, scammed, befriended, sleepless, and successful. But we’ve never struggled and we’ve never gone hungry.
Now I’ve never been quite so personal with you, I know.
There’s a reason why I am being so today…
I need you to stop running the treadmill.
- Stop paying for traffic that doesn’t convert.
- Stop buying and reading ebooks on how to successfully write and sell ebooks. One is enough.
- Stop buying into monthly membership websites that teach how to build a lucrative membership website.
The rules of success online HAVE changed.
The research shows that surfers aren’t using the web the way they did even a year ago. So why on earth are we all still buying up products and services on how to make it online that were written last year?
(This is precisely why, in October of 2006, I pulled two of my most successful products off the market even though people are clamoring for them still…)
Now I know this message isn’t an easy read. And I’m sad to report to you that I don’t have a fast and easy fix.
But I have been working hard at assessing where we’ve been (after 10 years that’s not hard at all), what’s hot right now, and how to use that knowledge to keep you and I both on the path to success.
In essense, I’ve sifted through a lot of useless info that won’t do much more than waste your precious time.
I’ve also found a lot of great stuff and I’d be pleased to share it with you – to get you further along the path to success, quicker.
I can’t let you fail at this. I have a personal responsibility to you as one of my loyal readers.
Actually it’s been so long since I’ve written, you quite likely have already forgotten me. That’s alright, it was the chance I had to take when I began compiling the information I wanted to one day share with you.
Below you will find a few links to some posts I’ve made about Web 2.0 on my other site about blogs, rss and the new web 2.0.

p.s. I might add that I don’t mean to talk you out of buying other marketer’s products unless (a) they’re very new and teach new techniques, or (b) you’re very new and haven’t learned the basics of website creation yet. My only intention was to say that you don’t need 5 ebooks on writing and selling ebooks, 4 swipe files on copywriting, 3 membership sites with resale rights…you understand.

Excellent blog! As the new kid on the block on this internet marketing thing, I should say that your article is quite inspiring. Would love to learn a few things from you, thanks.

I know this message isn’t an easy read. And…
Hi Laura,
Nice talking to you today. Looking forward to taking in all the good info you have to share.
Steve
I have to say this blog post was one of the hardest ones I’ve ever had to write. It doesn’t help your dreams of success, but hopefully it will get you track to larger success.
I flat out refuse to sell the dream anymore because our old make money online techniques just aren’t working as well as they used to. (Yes, they are still working, just less so than before.)
Even Ed Dale’s (Frank Kern’s partner) latest email was titled “The Times They Are A Changing” – apparently Ed listens to blues as well…
So excuse my in-your-face article above. If I lose a few readers, burst a few bubbles, or make you feel like you have to start all over again in your marketing, so be it. You’ll be better served in the long run with your online business.
Start thinking ‘tangible products’.
Start thinking ‘user experience’.
Start thinking ‘value to the visitor’.
Laura out.
Steve thanks for your call yesterday and your note here.
It’s always a pleasure chatting with like-minds and I’d never turn down a chance to chat with Alabama! (Made me miss home a little…)
Hi Laura, I personally love in your face- no BS type of writing there isn’t enough of that going around.
I have yet to read your Blogs and stuff but what I have read at this Website is very good. You have a LOT of info here and I have a lot of reading to do! My website CashingInOnTheWeb.com has a long way to go no doubt but I just wanted to get some money coming in and I think I went about it the wrong way I guess. It’s kind of hard trying to figure out what to do. Anyway, thanks for the info I have read from your site so far- needless to say I will be visiting this site often. -Allenn
Aloha Laura,
Thanks for the backlink.
Kind of depressing eh?
I did enjoy the “Internet marketing” niche but it is definitely time to reevaluate things — and make massive changes.
I think I have been in the wrong business…
Aloha,
