Install WordPress
Posted on January 21, 2006
I’ve had a few of these emails so I thought I’d better make it public…(not that it’s a big secret, but that it may help others, trolling the web in the wee hours, to get a fast answer to their question).
“I downloaded WordPress. Which host supports it and how do I install it?”
First of all let me say that I have no problems with people emailing me personally for help. As far as I’m concerned, as a marketer, that is part of my job - we’re not meant to just help people to the sale, we’re supposed to be helping people before and after it as well!
With that said, I do try to answer every email as well as respond to every question asked here, but life sometimes gets in the way as I have time-consuming involvements in my own community and a family to look after.
Anyway, let’s get down to business - answering the question and getting you set up with a new host and wordpress installation.
“I downloaded WordPress. Which host supports it and how do I install it?”
For almost all my sites now I use host gator.
In the sidebar of all blog pages you will see a clickable graphic.
Looks like this:
It will take you right to hostgator (with my affiliate link of course, and I thank you in advance if you use it - every bit helps - right now our family is trying to raising money for other family’s needs not just our own.)
Once at HostGator, click on Web Hosting.
If you’re planning on running more than one domain get the Baby Gator package. It’s less than $10 per month and you can have multiple domains with just one hostgator account. (If you will be running more than one domain in a baby account let me know and I’ll share some do’s and don’ts on inter-linking and related content.)
Once you’ve paid for your hosting account, you’ll receive a login to your ‘cPanel’ (host management) area. You simply need to login, find the Fantastico button (it’s on the right side, close to the bottom). Click it.
cPanel’s Fantastico will give you a number of programs that it will install for you - one of which is WordPress.
- Click WordPress
- Tell Fantastico where you want it to install wordpress (in a directory, in the root, etc.),
- Then answer a few more questions (email associated with this install, name of blog, password you want to use for the blog, etc. - these can all be changed later from within WordPress).
- Then click Install…
…30 seconds later your new WordPress blog is installed on your newly hosted domain!
Exit out of cPanel, login to your WordPress install, and get busy modifying templates or adding content to your new blog!

p.s. I can’t recommend a service I don’t use and still sleep at night, but I do have enough technical knowledge to assist you even if you don’t use my recommended host. If you’re running into a snag let me know. Either I, or our other readers might be able to help.

Hi Laura,
Thank you for the complete response.
That just about covers everything I need to make a decision.
As soon as I get that accomplished, and get my blog set up, I will send you the url and ask you to take a look at it and give me your opinion, which I value.
Sincerely,
Ed Mudge
If you really want to unlock all the fantastic features of WordPress (great search engine optimization, customization of templates, and more), don’t forget the awesome wordpress tutorials that Sherman Hu has on his site.
The first 22 videos are free, concise, and absolutely void of any geek-speak.
Sherman is a fantastic trainer that doesn’t just teach the program he also walks you through the reasons:
- why you’d want to blog,
- why choose WordPress,
- what is a cPanel host,
plus much more.
Go grab your free wordpress videos right now. It won’t cost you a cent and it won’t make you a propeller head. I promise!

Great job … Thanks for your work…
Hi Laura,
Just found you via Google search for WP datafeeds and am smiling - nice site with lots of good info. I’m ordering the WP datafeed from your link and will very likely be back with a dumb question or 2. Meantime, do you have suggesstions for best WP themes to work with data feeds?
Thanks,
Steve
Hey Steve: Let me know how it goes for you and when you’re ready to set up your WordPress Datafeed sites.
As for themes, just match your market and you’ll do well. Never distract from the product and always keep the buyer in mind. All I ever do is ask myself “If I was looking for an XYZ, would this page hold me longer than 30 seconds?” I know in 30 seconds or less I’ll have made my decision to shop elsewhere or click the buy now button.
Seasons Greetings! :~)
