Ping Me! Okay, not me – but ping these…

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

I was surfing around yesterday looking for ping engines to announce my new blog bits to….

And I gathered up this list of of ping engines from here there and everywhere – willy nilly.

Well then, if the list helps me it may help you, so feel free to scoop it up and add it to your own blog’s ping slot.

One word of warning – if you’re used to posting an item to your blog and only pinging one or two engines, you’ll likely notice a slow down in your blog software’s posting ability.

What’s the answer if this happens to you? Don’t ping them all…Take 10 off the list to ping and call it a day. Cut and paste these right into your blog backend.

Here is my known ping engine list – there may be many others:

  1. In WordPress Blogs – Click the Options tab, then the Writing link.

At the bottom of that page you’ll see “Update Services” – that’s the box to add the ping engine listing to.

  2. Laura – can you tell more about “adding these ping engines to your blog’s backend.” ? I use ping-o-matic now, and ping a dozen or so sites after each post (usually once a day), but I would love to know how to ping more sites.

    Thanks!

  3. Doesn’t pingomatic cover most of these?

  4. Laura,

Thank you for all the links. Can you please post on how you actually use these pings? I tried to goto api.my.yahoo.com/rss/ping in my browser and it gave me a error saying “Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.”

  6. Pingomatic does ping others on the list but adding the extras will not do your blog any harm – more is good in this case as it spreads the word a lot further.

  7. I agree with Mike. In this case, “more is better”. But I still don’t know how to “add these ping engines to your blog’s backend”. Just what is a blog’s “backend”? Can it be exposed in public, or will the blog police fine your fanny? Hey – laugh a little!

    funny! :)

I’m on a different machine at the moment…what type of blog are you running?

Then I can tell you how to add these to your ‘back-end’…

  9. Bonjour,
Same question as Happy Marketer: how do I add it “into your blog backend”? Do I need to write a “?” between the 2 URLs or something? Merci.

  10. Thanks Laura -
My blog is on blogspot.com, if that’s what you mean by “type” – It’s an article-rich blog focusing on affiliate marketing.

Say – is that a sewing machine or a drink machine you’re on – or is it a noodle-making machine, or maybe a confetti-shooting machine?

Ping-O-Matic has been down for a couple of days, and since my blog is through blogspot (I know, you hate them), I can’t add placed to ping in the backend. Do I have to manually go to each site and ping, or is there another site similar to pingomatic?

Try out pingoat.com. It works like pingomatic with more sites being pinged.

How exactly does blog posting, then pinging actually increase traffic?

    #721
  17. Posting, then pinging…

The short answer to how this increases traffic is that new posts get indexed faster by the search engines.

Each ping registers your new post and url of that post.

Search engine spiders and bots check the ping pages numerous times throughout the day, then drag themselves over to your blog to chew on the new content.

There are techniques to doing this effectively (one of which is adding more ping engines to your list as above), and of late people are saying that posting and pinging isn’t near as effective as it was 6 months ago.

Let’s just be clear. Posting and pinging is just as effective as before but due to the large number of blogs online now you’ve got to be real smart about the process!

First, your content must be topic targeted and keyword rich.

Secondly you want to know the time that the bots are known to be at any given ping engine. (Staying on top of that for me is one of the things I miss most about Revenue Insider.)

If you really want to know more, feel free to ask specific questions about the process.

  18. Thanks for the answer.
What is the latest inside information as to when to ping or blog and ping.

    #723
  19. That’s pretty valuable information you’re asking me for Marc!

If I shared it publicly or for that matter sold it, it wouldn’t be nearly as effective of a technique would it? Just think, hundreds of website owners – thousands even – all posting and pinging at precisely the moment google popped into weblogs…

And to be honest, I haven’t been keeping up with this info myself for about 3 months. It changes all the time and I haven’t been launching any new sites with problems getting indexed.

There is only one person I know of that even teaches how to do this…

Hi,Smartzville! If even not subscribe those ping engines yet, still can ping the blog?

    #725
  21. WY, yes you can. As a matter of fact for some of those on the list, pinging without having ever submitted your blog (or feed) url is the lazy way to start getting links in and announcing your new blog…

  24. [...] As you can see, I use a Wordpress blog and it’s really easy to add a “ping” to get new content visited by the search engines.  Just click Options, and select the Writing tab.  Add your “ping” to the “Update Services” box at the bottom of the page.  For some useful free ping addresses, visit here. 27. Michelle:

A blog’s back end is what’s behind the scenes – the administration area, the dashboard, the place where you post and your site visitors don’t see.
