Slammed By My List!
Posted on July 13, 2006
Today I want to talk to you about being a public punching bag…
It all just comes back full circle to an earlier post I made about having to have a thick skin to be in this business, to not taking any of it personally, to deleting the angry emails, unsubscribing people from your lists, and moving on. A lesson I still have yet to learn it seems because as I took my knocks this week it has left me with a really bad taste.
It all started with a free offer I sent to one of my mailing lists.
Now this subscriber list in particular, (not the one that subscribes to this blog):
- Is nearly 3 years old. Over 90% of them have been on my list from the start.
- The people on it (on average) have been marketing online for 3-5 years (so they’re a pretty savvy lot).
- Their purchases, on my recommendation, have fed and clothed my family, allowed me some financial breathing room as a single mom (back then), and many have contacted me one-on-one by email for both free advice and pay for service.
- Each one is near and dear to my heart because for a long time they were my lifeblood.
For all those reasons I try my hardest to give them the most relevant information in a timely fashion, about new tools and methods for search engine optimization, website promotion, increasing traffic and making sound business decisions.
- If a product or free service is widely promoted by other marketers I generally don’t tell my list about it. (I figure they’re getting it from so many others, why fill their inboxes up with more of the same?).
- I only email that list - on average - 2-3 times per month. (Remember we’ve already established a relationship, they ‘know’ me so I don’t have to work hard to ensure name recognition anymore.)
- In my emails I attempt to spell out, in the fewest words possible, who the product or service is for, what it does, and how it helps them.
Generally, that’s my mode of operation for a well cultivated list.
So I was rather shocked this week when more than a few of them wrote back nasty notes on a free product I was telling them to get!
First off, let me tell you about the free product.
It’s software.
It’s downright awesome.
It’s based on the original source code of Search Automator, which is a fantastic search tool I paid $40 for last year and use weekly to dig deep into online resources when researching new businesses, products and keywords - for myself, friends and family.
It allows you to search just for ebooks, online guides, articles, tips, video, audio, forums in your niche, free content published by the U.S. government, as well as content in the public domain, (that you can legally repurpose and sell online), and even ’secret’ content that Google will serve up (that 99.5% of searchers would never find on their own during a standard google search).
And it doesn’t stop there. And I’m not going to tell you anymore about it - go here if you want this free niche marketing tool.
Wait! Don’t go yet. I’m not finished with my story…
Now remember, the email I sent was to a bunch of savvy marketers, with whom I’ve cultivated a relationship of trust, kindness, and caring.
And the link I sent them is a pre-registration page - leave your name and email address and we’ll send you the link - with an upsell after the registration. Pretty standard stuff I say.
They didn’t have to buy the package - and most didn’t - to get the free niche marketing tool. They simply had to leave their name and email address, then check their email for the download link.
But so many of them didn’t check their emails before they sent me spiteful notes like this:
“Laura laura laura. I had come to trust you and you just let me down big time. I watched the little video and then registered my email address for a free offer to find that Nothing in life is free it was a camouflage to sell selll sell without the option just to down load….You have mislead your cherished database. It would have been more honest to tell us that it was great but part of a bag of tricks but is value. I as a member of your database I will be more circumspect in future.”
Ouch!
Instant mis-trust.
Instantly lumped into the ‘guru’ category of those promoting ‘bags of tricks’.
And that email was one of the gentlest of them all!
Where was my list that has been marketing online for 3-5 years and should know by now what a freakin’ upsell looks like?
Where was my list that already knows free, awesome tools come with a price of subscription (something they can cancel anyway once they get their freebie!)?
Where was my list that knows I am not in this business to ‘trick’, manipulate or show zero regard for their time and money?
Now to be fair, many of them wrote back within a few hours and said “Sorry. I should have checked my inbox before I shit on you.”
And each one of those apologies I replied to personally - which to be perfectly honest was a mistake because that entire exercise took me a few hours.
Here’s one of my replies. If you know me, you’ll know that I was pretty upset about all of this:
“I got your apology, thanks. Don’t sweat it. A lot of people attacked me over this one. I think I’m just about ready to get out of this business in a public way - I’ve taken too many knocks by strangers to my integrity. I don’t know, perhaps it’s just the age of mistrust but this just doesn’t fit my mission or mandate - of helping others.
I give so much time, helping others to get their business going, to keep their business in profit, and that’s time away from my family, my hobbies and joys, and my own business. Actually I even rewrote your latest press release and submitted it to over 50 press release websites last month on my own time and out of love for my fellow man. And your case is just one of many…
Yet still, with all that, so many came back to write cranky emails, unsubscribing and leaving nasty comments in the unsubscribe box. Perhaps this is God’s way of telling me to get out and move on… Laura”
Now of course there were many other replies from my subscribers. Replies of thanks and gratitude for sending them the link. Most of them couldn’t believe that something so cool and so useful was being offered free…
One of them was my dear Nancy friend in sunny California. You know Nancy followed my methods and techniques in 2004 and had many successes as a result. Actually she sent me a pair of 14K diamond earrings as a thank you, which was a pretty awesome surprise let me tell you!
Far better than a blow to my integrity.
And Pat, who sent me back this note: “You are right about the software. After watching the videos and testing the software myself I have found several very under served keywords in my niche. It seems to combine the best of several other free tools that I have downloaded. Thank you for letting us know…”
Somehow the heaps of insults seem to get blown away in the country breeze when you focus on the love, thanks, and kindness.
But all of this does bring me closer to making the move in online marketing that I’ve been talking about for the last three months. And that’s out of the limelight and into one-on-one business consultation with select partners and pre-screened clients.
I’ll write more on that another day.
Your friend in marketing,

Laura Childs
p.s. I can’t believe you’ve read this entire post! Remember, don’t leave here without grabbing your free niche marketing tool. Remember there is an upsell (you do know what that is right, because I don’t want any more cranky emails), and to check your inbox after signing up for the download link.

It is not your fault Laura.
That marketer should have used a thank you page or popup that says “Check Your Email, The free Software will be sent to the address you entered” Then he could have used a redirect script to take the user to the sales letter upsell after seeing the thank you page. Or he could simply put a note on the top of the sales letter page that explains how to get the free software and introduces the upsell.
He is actually turning people off from his upsell offer by not having a simple thank you page or note that explains what happens next. He is losing sales because of this too.
Besides there are many people that are just lying in wait for a well known marketer to slip up so that they can shoot off a nasty email.
The other day I sent an email to my list and one guy took the time out of his life to write a 600 word essay in which he berated and reprimanded me for possibly doing something that could mislead innocent people into buying something useless. The thing was he never accussed me of doing anything wrong, he just wanted to vent about “other marketers” who do the same thing just to trick people. He said “I hope you are legit, if not I expect a full apology to your list immediately”
I could not believe he wrote all of that without any proof that I was guilty of anything. He could have double checked the information in my email with 2 phone calls easily and this would have taken him less time than it did to compose that essay/rant!
I also always let people know when they annoy or hurt me. I let them know that I am human and just because this is the internet and I am a marketer … it doesnt give you the right to be nasty and rude and not expect me to respond in kind.

I like your emails–thanks
Hi Laura
Like you I bought Search Automator last year, however I found it a bit buggy and it knocked out copy and paste on all my programs whilst it was running so I stopped using it.
It seems the new product has one or two extras now so I’ll give it another go, particularly as you’re recommending it.
I was sorry to read about all the crap you got over Niche Browser, by any standards it’s a hell of a product for nothing. Out of all the emails I get from gurus, marketers and the like there are maybe 3 or 4 that I always make a point of reading without fail and you’ll be pleased to hear you’re one of them.
Here’s why you are one of them:
1. You only write when you’ve got something worthwhile to say.
2. You come up with things that I just don’t hear from all the marketers and gurubies (my term for a new internet marketer that has success with a product and is then convinced that they re-invented the wheel and tells the world relentlessly about how wonderful they are).
3. You don’t send me two copies of every email “just in case†the spam blocker got it, I’ve been unsubscribing these posters wholesale lately. I’m afraid I don’t buy this line, surely if the spam blocker gets it once it sure as hell will get it the second time.
4. You go out of you way to offer free advice with problems often at some considerable inconvenience to yourself I’ve no doubt.
So, I hope that this post makes you feel a little more appreciated. BTW, the Google LSI article was a very clear summary of how it all works, been meaning to thank you for that one all week. I plan to spend some time studying the content closely to learn how better to succeed in Google.
Keep your chin up and always remember – you can’t fix people. Why? Because they know they’re right!
Hi Laura,
I’m so sorry that this happened to you. Good thing many apologized, but those that were too proud to do so, that’s just God’s way of purging your list from the greedy losers who have no interest in a loving business friendship, only what they can get out of it.
And besides, if that’s the level of marketing savvy they have, they can’t be very successful anyway.
We say ‘God bless you’ for every little thing, even when someone sneezes.
Bless means to empower to prosper, and that’s exactly what He’s done for you in the past and will continue to do!
Hi Laura,
You may find this arrogant, but this is how I deal with rant emails:
If it’s full of spelling and grammatical errors, I delete it without reading it. I get a warm glow from knowing that they invested considerable time, effort and emotional capital into something that took me one second to delete. I didn’t want them on my list anyway.
If they missed the point entirely, I delete it after reading it. I get a warm glow from knowing I don’t have to deal with such a stupid person again.
This may leave one or two who either have legitimate points or who simply have a viewpoint that is different from mine. To these, I give the courtesy of a detailed and hopefully well thought out reply. This is a debating exercise that I both enjoy and gain from.
So, dear Laura, don’t sweat it. Divide your replies into these three categories and devote your energy only to the very small percentage who deserve it … and take pleasure from deleting the rest!
I just went and got Niche Browser. Sheesh, it says quite clearly you will be emailed the link. Can’t the people who slammed you read? While I was reading the upsell, Outlook popped up its “You have new mail” message and there was the promised email with the confirmation link. It’s not rocket science, is it?
Thank you all for your kindness and words of wisdom.
I’m the queen believer of collaboration and I love the fact that you all come here and share your experiences, your ideas, and your honest hearts - in the spirit of healing mine.
Your words don’t just help me, but many others will happen across this post…
Some will learn not to dump on others.
Some will learn that even though ’second mailings’ are profitable, they also result in losing quality subscribers.
Some will learn that internet marketing isn’t really all fun and games and that even though your subscribers are gold, their crankiness should never be taken too personally.
Some will learn that the fact we’re still here on planet earth means that we’re incredibly blessed - a wonderful gift this is.
And still others will see that online business is about building relationships, not just hammering your list with offers day after day…
You all took the time to reply and I appreciate that, more than my words could ever express.
May we all continue to grow, learn, build relationships and support each other in our journeys!
Laura
p.s. ‘No Name’,
I know who you are (I recognize that untelling email addy in my admin). I appreciate you. Thanks.
Thanks again to all!
Hi Laura,
Thanks for the valuable tips and updates, and a bigger thanks for sharing your experience with me.
This is a lesson for anybody who takes the trouble to read your blog - the problem is many people don’t bother to read properly…
Hence the negative reaction - to those that unsubscribed I’d say good riddance they’ve shown you their true colours and you don’t need them in your life.
Next time I write an email I’ll make sure to keep it even simpler to ensure that nobody misunderstands my message.
Keep your pecker up, you’re doing a great job and are much appreciated.
All the best,
Stuart.
Stuart:
I laughed outloud and woke the house when I read ‘keep your pecker up’!
I’m not sure if it’s a chicken related joke or your kick butt copy, but it gave me one final smile at the end of a day.
Thanks
Laura
Laura,
I don’t remember when I subscribed to your list but if I have stayed subscribed this long it can only be because I have some benefit from it.
I may have or not have bought something from you.
In any case most of your subscribers I would think have an interest in IM. They should understand therefore that you are not operating a charity but a business. And by giving away free resources directly or indirectly you are giving them a benefit as well as yourself.
In this particular case it was very clear that the link to the download was to be emailed. If they did not want the link they just did not have to fill out the form.
People who stay on a list just for the freebies! You don’t need them.
Anyhow I am not unsubscribing.
David
Laura, I’ve been on your various lists since “Stampede Secret” launched. I appreciate you and your style. As No Name pointed out, the upsell page missed a lick in not repeating both the email process and the upsell process.
I appreciate you not duplicating emails ‘just in case’ or its cousin ‘oops, I messed up the link again’. This one actually cracks me up. How much credibility does a marketing guru have who consistently demonstrates an inability to construct a simple URL?
Keep it coming…
John
PS- just had another thought (kind of frightening, sometimes ;-)). Sometimes when I get multiple emails from a given offer, I have to remind myself that I’m on multiple lists from that marketer. Case in point, I got two copies of the email you sent to tell us about this post. One from the ‘Stampede Secret’ list and one from your Smartzville list, both of which I intend to stay on. JAM
Laura,
I feel your pain and I agree with the other commenters, this particular marketer’s strategy was incorrectly implemented. I was put off when I signed up myself (from a different newsletter, not yours.) But I decided to check my email because the marketer was clear about it being FREE, so I assumed that the marketer had another way of giving the subscribers the free tool.
Anyway, the shockwave needs to go to the marketer not you. However, this was a big lesson for me on how to set up my own offers. I will ALWAYS let the consumer know what is going on STEP,by STEP, by STEP. If this marketer had done this, all of the hullabaloo could have been avoided.
Wendy
Hi Laura,
Absolutely unbelievable!
I honestly don’t recall whether I saw any instructions to check my Inbox after I input my details, but hello-o-o! - anyone with even half a brain should have been able to figure out that hey, if I didn’t get the download link straight away, then maybe, just maybe, it’s been emailed to me!
And anyone who has been on your list for any length of time should know you better than to think you’d be doing anything to mislead them about anything.
I for one go out of my way to purchase products through YOUR link when I receive emails from various marketers about the same product. If I haven’t already clicked on someone else’s link, I make sure I go to yours first. Why? - because I appreciate that you have gone the extra mile for me when your RSS system wouldn’t work on my webhost. And I do mean an extra mile. (I won’t say what it was, Laura, or you might have a stampede of people asking for the same thing!)
Don’t lose heart, Laura. As others have said above, you don’t need a$&* # like those losers on your list. Be glad you’ve got rid of them.
All the best,
Brigitte
Big Hug to you Laura - You always do right by people.
I can’t understand why anyone would give you any grief.
Lots of Love
Gerry
