Social Bookmarking Buzz

Wow!

Social Bookmark Marketing Is One Hot Topic!

When I sent an email out to my website marketing list two days ago I had no idea how popular the topics of social proof for websites, traffic from tagging, or the power of back links, would be. It seems the online business world is more than ready to get some really good information on Web 2.0 sites and traffic from those sites.

“Sometimes I’m just in my own little farm world - assuming that everyone already knows this stuff…”

So I was more than a little shocked when so many wrote me back asking for clarification on social bookmarking as well as having tagged pages from Technorati and other popular bookmark sites.

So let’s clear up some confusion about tags and social bookmarking okay?

Social bookmarking (aka page, site or image tagging) is the process of using a web service to keep track of your personal bookmarks. The difference between using your browser’s bookmark list and an online bookmark service is that the online version is public.

Online bookmarking sites include technorati, del.icio.us, digg and many others. I won’t get into the reasons why these sites have become so popular by humans and search enigne spiders alike - just trust me on this one - it’s hot.

Now, from an SEO standpoint YOU will want YOUR web pages and urls listed on those sites for the following top two reasons - backlinks for positioning and visitor traffic from surfers.

And that’s what Sean Wu’s course is all about…

Sean’s course - mentioned in my Wednesay email - is unfortunately named after a now nearly defunct technique. And THAT made everyone’s radar go way up…

I hadn’t even considered that people would make those types of assumptions without knowing anything about the topic, about Sean, or for that matter not even having read the content.

You should read what some people - respected experts even - are saying and the comments left on Sherman’s blog. Pretty sad when you think about it - to bash someone’s product and technique on heresay and assumption.

And those that aren’t complaining about the product (of which they haven’t read) are whining about the price. They’re saying “This information is available freely elsewhere.” Ummm, no it’s not. Sean’s research and time on 2.0 techniques created that product. His testing and tracking shaped the content. Then he went to work compiling, marketing, and building up an affiliate team - all so other website owners could have a one-stop research point on the topic and an expert to confer with if something didn’t make sense.

Those price pointers - hmm - they haven’t figured out yet that time is money. If they’ve got 20-40 hours to learn from a variety of online posts scattered all over the web, try what they’ve learned, and figure out the fast way to perform the tasks, then that makes their time worth between $3.50 to $7.00 per hour. (Doing the math - Sean’s course is selling for $147)

But perhaps all that bashing and whining is to our advantage…

Because if this technique for traffic and positioning doesn’t reach the masses we’ll have it made for many, many months (perhaps years) to come.

And even if it does reach the masses we’ll still gain lots of extra traffic from learning how to do it right.

Take what he’s going to show you, don’t over use or abuse the process and techniques and you should see the results you seek. If any part of the course seems questionable then don’t do it. If you are uncertain you can post a comment below and I’ll answer - as always.

Tagging is a perfectly acceptable, when used responsibly, technique for traffic. It is no different than optimizing a web page for search engine positioning, then entering that url onto google’s add URL page.

If you still need more information on what tags and bookmarks are all about, grab this 10 page, free download on tagging. That pdf was written by a woman marketer who has also used the technique for great results.

But if you’re ready to find out how to put social bookmarking and tagging to work for you right away, head over to the full treatment on tagging.

We’ll talk again soon,

    Hi Laura,

I think it will reach the masses…today!

I’m subscribed to about 10 email marketing lists and every single one has been promoting Sean Wu’s Tag and Ping. There is more hype about this than Blog and Ping.

Unbelievable. When irresponsible marketers start flooding these social bookmarking sites, it will force them to change the way they operate.

I would expect that the “no follow” will be implemented very soon after they figure out what’s going on. Should be interesting to see what happens.

    Hi Tate:

    Just a few notes…

    Thanks for writing back.

The ‘nofollow’ tag is only a google tag. Yahoo, MSN and the others don’t recognize it.

It took google nearly a year to put the nofollow tag and word verification into place on blogspot (which is where most of the blog and pingers operated from). If it takes google that long, it will take these smaller sites longer.

I’ve been using tags for over a year now on a few other sites. On one site I had a PR4 on the home page on the next google update (which was only one week after site registration). I was pretty shocked, but no time to test the theory that it was due to tagging.

Anyway, stay in touch! It’s great to hear from you!

    Hey Laura,
I’ve been watching the development of the tag and ping launch and can see both sides of the argument.

I do believe that if Sean hadn’t released this information on such a large scale, another marketer would have. He was just being a smart marketer in that respect.

However, it’s unfortunate that many other marketers will use the techniques and information improperly to the detriment of everyone.

The ‘nofollow’ tag is only a google tag. Yahoo, MSN and the others don’t recognize it.

Yahoo! may not follow the rel=”nofollow” attribute, but it does adhere to the nofollow robots meta tag (which is what Technorati and Del.icio.us currently have in place). It would not take much for the other social bookmarking/tagging sites to follow suit and nip backlink value in the bud.

I totally agree that tagging can be great, but with great power comes great responsibility.

I just sent this note by personal email to Teli, of whom I know little about, except for her work, her business ethics and her writing style. Although it reads like a testimonial for her WordPress script (because I have had such great success with it), I figured I’d share it here so that (a) we all remember to tell people how much we appreciate their work (I often forget this myself), and (b) to let my readers know that I hold her in very high regard.

    ———-

    Teli:

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your awesome and fun script.

Personally I love working with it, because it’s easy and versatile, and it’s fun too! I feel like I’m shopping for others when I load up or check the posts and products added to my blog.

It was just two weeks after I registered and loaded up products on a brand new website that google gave me a PR4 on the home page and a bunch of lesser PRs on category pages. I’m waiting for the next google update before I assess how well I’ve done on positioning, but now I sit at 46 out of 1,040,000 results for my top level keyword - which isn’t too shabby considering this is a brand new site.

AND, as if all that isn’t great enough, I’ve been earning affiliate commissions on products sold on my site, plus being your affiliate, so heck, life is good all ’round.

I really just wanted to write this note to thank you for your work, for your support, and to let you know how valued you are. Sometimes I think we all forget to tell each other these things - we’re too busy focusing on issues and problems, distrust, and lack of results. Come to think of it, that’s another thing I appreciate about you - you are objective in your own writing without being negative. It’s refreshing Teli and I’m proud to be aligned with you.

You do rock, keep up the great work.

    Laura Childs
