What should I sell? What products are hot selling? These are the questions most people are trying to find an answer in order for them to make the definite decision. We must be able to understand and satisfy the need, wants and expectations of our customers on a certain product that they’re trying to buy. This three are called the basic needs or minimum requirements in a purchase.

Needs are the basic reasons or the minimum requirements consumers are looking for in a product or service. They are called the qualifying or gatekeeper dimensions in a purchase.

Wants are the determining dimensions among many choices. Expectations, on the other hand, are values or intangibles associated with a product or service. Expectations are actually part of ‘wants’ but they become extremely important when products or services are not differentiated.

For example, in reading a logic book, university students look for the following:

• Relevant logic concepts use of simple language, easy to understand and affordable prices.

These similar ideas can be applied to Internet Sales as well. After all, the Internet is just another place to sell products. The basic concept of demand is the same there as it is anywhere else, and has been all the time.

Now, the second thing that must be considered in finding hot products to sell are the level of competition or the market shares do your product will have. Market share or level of competition means the ratio of your brand sales versus the total market sales.

While companies would naturally define its target competitors, it is actually the consumers who ultimately decide the competitive frame, or the list related products or services that consumers consider when exercising their purchasing power.

We must therefore choose the market segment where we can have a potential leadership or at least a strong challenger role. Because the overriding objective of getting into this business is not just to satisfy the needs and wants of our customers but to do so profitably better than his competition. Third factor to be considered in finding hot selling products is finding out the general interest level about the product. General interest in a product helps us to gauge where our demand and competition numbers fall into the big picture. Simply saying, if there isn’t much demand for the product, and there isn’t much competition, it would seem that it might not be good a good put up for sale. But the research doesn’t stop here; there is one last thing to be considered to exactly find the hot selling products that you’ve been looking for. We must also learn how others are advertising those products. If there are a good number of them doing so, it may mean that it’s a good product to get into. Coming to the last phase of the process is analyzing and evaluating all the information that has been collected. We have to look at all of the data we have collected on demand, competition, and advertising, and make decision as how they all balance out.

And here are several factors or aspects that must be measured:

(a) not enough demand means not enough people are going to buy,
(b) too much competition means not enough of a profit to go around,
(c) too much advertising drives up the price of pay per click ads, and competition as well, and
(d) not enough general interest, combined with low demand, means there may not be a good market even if there is competition trying to make the sales.

The first thing is to have your own website. It is essential for you to have your own website when affiliate marketing is your career. Since most potential customers go to websites to search and purchase items they were looking for, it makes sense to have your own site, preselling and/or reviewing products.

Another thing to remember is to have your own ad. A lot of times affiliate marketers have published the same ad two or three times that were created by the merchants. Step three, have some products of your own which are only available through your website. Being an affiliate marketer we must then choose a certain market segment where you can have a potential leadership.

The fourth step is to build a strong relationship with people who already buy your product. You can better sell a product that you are trying to market when you have first hand knowledge of it. You can share to your potential customers what a great experience you had with the product, and this can make them interested enough to try it for themselves. So as I sit here, day after day, waiting for the new house to build itself so I can get back to work, I thought I’d write a series of blog posts on starting an internet business. What to sell, how to sell it, the variety of website types, and so on.

First, we’ll talk about ebook authoring and sales.

More often than not, this is what my subscribers desire more information on. Back to the very basics though – they don’t even know what to write or publish a book on!

Here’s how to find ebook ideas….

Look around you and determine your own and your friends’ interests. Write a list. Think of the problems you or your friends have solved – relative to those interests. Any problem that has been solved in your own environment, surroundings and network, could easily be a subject of a new ebook. People love to read and resolve how others have solved the problem that they are currently experiencing.

Brainstorm a list of problems in your life and in the lives of those around you. Your friend Joan recently lost her job? Your niece just had mumps without vaccination? Your best friend discovered an easy way to create a hobby table for his train set?

What were the issues, the solutions, the concerns? How did they cope or resolve their troubles?

How to lose the last ten pounds. The straightest path to becoming a millionaire. Cutting your grocery bill or fuel costs in half. Fixing a leaky faucet for good? These are problems waiting for ebook solutions!

Keep in mind that you don’t always have to know the solution or be an expert – you just need the topic and a little time to research or a little money to hire an author. You could get someone else to do the research and write the book for you. You will not actually be writing one word.

DIY Research for Your Ebook

The internet is a great way to find out what people are looking for at any given moment. You can search for almost anything. Googleâ„¢ is a popular search engine you can use, or you can try any of the others like Yahoo!® or DogPile.com.

And while you’re online researching, be sure to uncover the most popular nonfiction book titles and sub-titles from the New York Times bestseller list or Amazon. You’ll quickly uncover exactly what book subjects people are buying right now.

Try this. Go to www.amazon.com. From the tabbed menu running along the top of the Amazon home page, click “Top Sellers.”

I did this one day and found several nonfiction books with titles such as Natural Cures “they” won’t tell you about, how what you wear can change your life, How to profit from the decline of the dollar, and so on.

I’ve paraphrased, but you get the idea.

Here’s what I learned just from spending a few minutes on Amazon. People are reading good fiction from already-best selling authors. Secondly, Amazon buyers are interested in nonfiction topics such as improving their lives and making more money. For these books, just about any author will do, even virtual unknowns or people who went to prison for lying to the American public.

Remember that the straightest route to ebook profits is in the nonfiction ebook market. This is for a number of reasons.

• Fiction readers tend to like to curl up in a chair with an actual book.
• Some of them attend book clubs where the physical books are brought around someone’s kitchen table with wine and cheese.
• Fiction readers tend to purchase from authors they’re already familiar with.
• Fiction can be more difficult to write and deliver well.
• Also, many of the classics in fiction are available as free ebooks. A reader interested in fiction could just download those.

Stick with nonfiction unless you’re feeling particularly bold and experimental.

Also, don’t get caught up on copyright. Not that it isn’t important, but just because someone else wrote a book on saving money on income tax doesn’t mean that no one else can write about it! Ideas are not copyrighted, therefore any idea you see, hear, or read anywhere anytime, is yours to use. You can create books around the same ideas that are covered in the Amazon best seller list, and turnaround and create an ebook on the exact same subject!

Now, copyright law does protect the way ideas are expressed, so you want to make sure your hired author does not plagiarize or copy book text outright. You cannot use the title verbatim either. But there’s nothing stopping you from creating another book or ebook that covers the same subject with a different voice. It’s all as completely legal. This is why looking at bestseller lists is a great way to get topic ideas.

Writing for Hobbies

There are groups of people who are willing to buy nonfiction ebooks: hobbyists. At any given time, these people are looking for ways to spend their money on their hobbies. Their passion is your financial gain.

What avid hobbyists want will always make great ebook material. Note that I did not say what hobbyists need.

You may have certain opinions on what exactly certain people should need or should read. But those are not necessarily good topics for immediate ebook profit. Those topics may be areas for you to dabble in at your leisure. However, if you want to make money at this, find out what niche groups want, and hit those groups with your ebook.

Find hobbyists and niche groups by searching the web for “popular hobbies,” “enthusiasts,” or “what America is buying.” Or, you can search specifically for forums and discussion groups for hobbyists. In the forums, people talk with each other to share ideas with one another. Often, they will exchange testimonials for equipment, upcoming events, and books.

I will write more on this topic later. For now, start investigating, journaling or researching your ideas and their solutions – even if to simply secure a ghostwriter.

Time flies.

Not such a little kid anymore, today she’s a strong and smart young woman. In fact she’s more than that – she’s my best buddy and my favorite travel companion. (Last year we did a month long trip to Europe together and came back stronger than ever! If you ever need to reconnect with your teen, take them out of their element and devote your every moment on them for a month. Something magical happens, I promise!)

I’ve been out of the loop for the last few months as many of my regular readers know. Working on other projects and not wanting to fill up the world wide web with unnecessary ramblings.

Here’s another cool widget – this one for consultants. It’s called WDeal and it places a small button on your site. If your site readers use it to call you for advice or consultation, and they’re paying for your time at the rate you set. Very innovative.

Today I want to talk to you about using that same video content to earn money online.

How much money?

We’re not talking small-potatoes-split-the-adsense-click revenue stuff here. You could make up to $400 per video, $2,000 for flash animations, and you can even make money with your photos.

All content has to be original, of course, and there are other stipulations on the content (mostly dealing with copyright, but also regarding popularity of your content).

Got Video?

The types of video that could earn you money are numerous – but these wouldn’t be the advertisement type disguised as a how-to. No, these videos are entertaining, expose, or truly valuable tutorials that people rate, vote on and share.

If you own copyrights to such content check out these sites:

Break.com – seems to pay the most right now, has an alexa ranking of 310 and Google PR of 6. You can also use Break.com to host your videos and have them stream into your own sites (saving you bandwidth).

Second choice is up-and-climbing Lulu.tv with an innovative revenue share model. Here’s how it works: 80% of all ad revenue for the site goes into a pool every month. At month’s end all shareholders receive their ‘take’. Lulu uses this example: If their site videos attracted 1,000,000 viewers and you got 10,000 of those viewers that’s 1%. So you get 1% of the cash pool. They state that this month the pool is 5,000 (1% of 5,000 is 50).

What’s not clear here? What Lulu means by ‘you get’ those viewers (your video attracted an ad view? an ad click? a user account? what?) and what currency are we talking – I’d definately work much harder for 50 pounds than 50 dollars, etc. LuLu’s FAQs are not clear. However Alexa tells me that their traffic rank is 77, 875 (a wild guess suggests 1,000-1,500 uniques a day).

Flixya.com was another one worth mentioning, but the rewards program has been suspended until further notice but once offered prizes such as nanos, psps, and even MacBook Pros.

At the moment you can still make a cut on the the Adsense revenue share (which really doesn’t make any worthwhile use of your time given that you could earn so much more for your efforts elsewhere). Better news about Flixya is that they are about to release version 2 which will include personal spaces and a 100% Adsense revenue share. With an alexa rank of 14,489 and a PR of 6 on the home page there is potential for bringing some foot traffic to your site. (It is unknown at this time whether the new version will employ ‘nofollow’ tags.)

If these three don’t appeal to you, below is a list of video hosting sites that have varying revenue share options (while we all continue to wait for YouTube to get it’s act together on this).

Finally, there is a great conversation on TechCrunch about this right now (TechCrunch currently has javascript errors on their site so you may need to refresh their page twice to view the article and comments).

It’s a little piece of javascript code you can put in your blog posts, on your sidebar, within your html pages, anywhere that you have put Google’s Adsense in the past and found they didn’t make you any money!

What’s really cool is that the code (created by the server – all you do is cut and paste) comes in all the same shapes and sizes as Adsense ads – so you won’t need to change the format or layout of any existing pages, just cut and paste and presto!

So, if you’ve been thinking you wanted to run eBay ads and earn some easy commissions, but you didn’t want to buy the script that creates entire websites around the eBay affiliate program, this is for you!

Right now they’re paying 100% of the eBay affiliate commission to the publisher (that’s you) and the money arrives in your PayPal account. This may change (I haven’t heard) after the initial launch, at any rate the payouts are bound to be higher than most people are making on their crappy ol’ Adsense clicks.

The alternative is to sign up with eBay’s affiliate program through Commission Junction, then muddle through the eBay editor kit, then paste that code into your web pages, then wait a month for Commission Junction to pay you (often longer if you’re set to be paid by check via the postal service).

One other good reason to use the snippets set up by AuctionAds – they have the potential to earn you more than you’d make via CJ as their network grows (this has to do with eBay’s sliding scale and performance incentives to publishers).

This takes 5 minutes to create an account, get the code and paste it into your web property. Why not try it and test the results today?

And today an internet marketing friend shared with me his free report titled: “The Death of Internet Marketing”

The email was a notification about Michael Rasmussen’s free videos on how to manage a list of subscribers and write emails that are opened, read and acted upon.

Thousands followed the link and grabbed the free videos, many (after seeing the quality of the content) decided they needed to learn more from Michael) and upgraded to own the full set. However it was not necessary to upgrade to gain some valuable information au gratis.

Here’s part of the email I sent out:

Now let me tell you about the two people who wrote back…

One subscriber wrote back and said, “I’m just starting my business so I didn’t sign up. I can’t spend money on everything that comes along. Please tell me if I really need this…”

First of all, the time that it took to write that email to me could have been invested in signing up for free and watching those videos – moving forward in your business instead of wondering and treading water. Secondly, I don’t send my subscribers anything that I don’t use, haven’t seen or reveiwed, or believe in myself…

It’s okay, I know we’re all skeptical and worried about handing over our email address for free products and not wanting to be subjected to enticing offers and upsells. Let’s use our heads here. Get yourself a free email account and use that address to subscribe for the free offers. Or, once subscribed, if you feel like a number that is just being pitched to, unsubscribe from any follow-up emails once you’ve received your free offer.

“Personally I spend an hour of every day reading other marketer’s emails. Why? To stay on top of the new product offerings but also to analyze and learn from the wide variety of email copywriting that sells. I don’t envision that time as being pitched to, I see it as an educational experience.”

Now before I run off on a tangent, let me tell you about the second subscriber who wrote back to me…

“Laura, I’m unsubscribing from all marketing related email lists. Everything is written to sell me, nothing is purely to help. I’ve ordered some of the products and I’m always left knowing I have only been given the tip of the iceberg, that there is something more I need to succeed online…”

I promise to share my response to this gentleman another day in a comment to this post, but in the meantime I’m wondering what action you would have taken had you received an email like this from your subscriber…

Would you:

• Just let them go because obviously they aren’t a good match for you and your business?
• Realize that they are one of those people who spend hundreds or thousands on products and never put them to use (and therefore are a lost cause anyway)?
• Think that here’s a guy that once spent money on marketing projects and probably would spend money again IF you could find the product that met his desires, or shared the secret he thinks we’re all holding back from him?
• Analyze that if one person wrote an email like this it’s quite likely that another 99 had similar thoughts – and take action to create a product that will suit their needs?
• Or _____________?

You don’t have to answer me here, you don’t even have to email me your answer, but I do suggest that you think about what your reaction to an email like this would be.

Let me say that again: “Your reaction holds the key to your future online business success,” because the internet, and the surfers of it, and your subscribers are changing. As they change, the way you market to, interact and react to your customers and readers will change – if you want to survive.

How do I know this?

Next month I celebrate 9 years of working online from home. No boss, no paycheck. Just me and the world wide web.

• Nine years ago I was fortunate enough to work with the longest running internet marketing expert Marlon Sanders for about 4 months – but I wasn’t smart enough to ‘get’ what he was trying to show me.
