Alright so the other day I was reading in a popular little magazine that always comes with the Sunday morning newspaper. You might have heard of it, it’s called Parade, and while I was thumbing through the pages I stumbled upon the perfect demonstration of research applied.

It was an ad for a product called StriVectin which is a neck cream that supposedly deals with the problem of ‘turkey neck’ skin for middle and older aged women.

It was a very simple ad that gets straight to the point. The ad basically read, Got Turkey Neck?… New StriVectin Neck Cream visibly lifts, tightens, smoothes and tones neckline – call (their number) or visit (their website). Remember if you have skin you need StriVectin. Before the title of the ad it also read, StriVectin The Stretch-Mark Cream Turned Anti-Wrinkle Phenomenon!

Let’s Break It Down

I hope you’ve got a pen and pencil ready! Let’s look at who their target market or should I say perfect customer really is. Well, from the title “Got Turkey Neck” and product, we know that their target market is women or more specific or niche as I like to say, is older women suffering from wrinkled skin. In case you didn’t know, women are the perfect customer or at least they hold the purchasing power and they also have a lot of problems that need to be solved and a lot of needs that need to be met, lots of things that drive them). I’m willing to bet that the majority of people who read the Parade magazine are middle to older aged women. And the ad copy perfectly addresses their problem as well as a solution to it.

Checking affiliate networks such as Clickbank and Commission Junction are good places to begin. Simply doing a search for your keywords with the words “affiliate program” included will also give you a good idea of what’s out there.

Once you have compiled all of your information you should have a good idea of possible niche markets and if they have the potential to be profitable for you. The final decision on which niche market to target can be based on the highest search count, the least competitors, the highest number of Adwords ads or a combination of all of these factors. Finding the perfect balance between search volume and competition is up to you. Once you find your niche, you can move onto building your website to capitalize on it as effectively as possible. Whatever product or service you are selling, you can likely dig deeper and identify a segment of the broad market. Using the example above, your segment or “niche market” would be those people who specifically want to buy life insurance. If you follow those tips, you may be surprised at how easily you are able to convert your prospects into customers.

The book is well organised. It has three main sections detailing step by step the methods of finding profitable niches, building niche websites and promotion. There is a further section on how to keep your niche marketing business going and growing.
