The Connection between Blogs and RSS Feeds
Posted on March 10, 2005
Let’s see if this helps to put the pieces together…
Most blog software generates it’s own RSS Feed dynamically - oddly enough many bloggers don’t even know the capability is there! Much less what it’s doing…
Blogs are great if you have time to write every few days. If you don’t have time, you can generate the search engine friendly RSS Feed independantly of a blog.
RSS Feeds are the hard working files in the background of many blogs that get the search engines excited about your website. (This is somewhat controversial and I’m bound to be slammed for it, but I accredit the fast and easy RSS Feed for most of the traffic perks of blogging and non-blogging sites.)
Simply adding an RSS Feed will work wonders when you already have a site pre-loaded with existing content. It takes just a few minutes every couple of days to add a sentence or two to an RSS Feed.
Lastly, not all blog software is created equal. I’ve played around now with many of them and I swear by WordPress. It’s donation ware, feature rich, and picks up the ball where so many other blog services/software
drop it. However if you want to add on extras, rather than just the post and comment, you’ll need to learn a bit about code (not high end stuff, just a little php) or have a webmaster jump in for the feature bits.
Another alternative is TypePad - I haven’t used it but I know many people who have. If you want ‘extras’ on your TypePad blog you simply pay TypePad to include the feature on your blog.
Blog software to steer clear of? Google’s own: Blogger. Although it’s easy and free and useful for other website marketing techniques - it’s feed feature isn’t as versatile as the others.
