Writing Well, Spelling Well for Top Search Engine Ranks
Posted on December 1, 2005
Interesting research and information on the Search Engine Journal by Guest Columnist Joel Walsh…
I read it a while back but wanted to ‘chew’ on it and make a few of my own observations before sharing it publicly here.
There’s a lot of good tips on the page that I’m sure you already know:
- writing articles for reprint
- using bullet points
- updating your content frequently
- contextual relevance (I’ll talk more about this later - this IS the way of the future for Search Engine Optimization)
But the shocking part (at least to many of us) of this research was the revelation that:
- grammar,
- spelling,
- and writing style,
were other attributes shared by well positioned pages in Google.
Interesting…
If you have any time over the holidays (or any other time thereafter for that matter), your time could be well served by visiting your competitors, observe and learn from their writing and layout styles, and refreshing your own pages (paying closer attention to spelling, grammar, writing for the web, shorter sentences and so on).

Cool Water…the ads are to the right of your comment. Not sure how (or why) you missed it.
